Are you a smoothie person? I love the thick, creamy, and flavorful ones, especially for breakfast when I’m in a hurry. They power up my day and keep me satisfied for hours. Plus, what’s not to love about smoothies, right? I mean, you just toss some whole food, unprocessed ingredients into a blender, blitz it for a few seconds, and bam – breakfast’s ready!
Smoothies aren’t just tasty treats; they’re also brain fuel. Chocked full of all the must-have vitamins, minerals, and healthy fats, they keep your brain on its A-game.
With all these benefits, it’s pretty obvious that I’ve tried a handful of healthy smoothie recipes. But my ride-or-die breakfast buddies are the Greek yogurt smoothie recipes.
It’s their versatility that I love the most! You can flavor them with your choice of fruit, and they’ll always deliver with that protein punch. Among my favorites are strawberry smoothie, peanut butter banana smoothie, coffee smoothie, and blueberry smoothie.
Today, I have brought you my absolute favorite Greek Yogurt Smoothie recipe. It’s got all the good stuff – juicy blueberries, plain Greek yogurt, and a splash of orange juice. Yum!
Ready to give it a try? Let’s get blending!
Greek Yogurt Smoothie Ingredients
This Greek yogurt recipe only needs five basic ingredients. You can, of course, jazz it up with whatever add-ons you want, but that’s optional. So, see what your pantry has and decide if you want that in your glass.
Here’s the list of the ingredients you can’t leave out for this recipe:
1 Cup Greek Yogurt
Smooth and creamy Greek yogurt is the base of this smoothie. It adds a nice tangy flavor and loads it with protein.
What’s more, Greek yogurt has a lot of health benefits. It’s a calcium powerhouse, aids in weight loss, and keeps the digestive tract healthy with all the probiotic content. Plus, its creamy texture makes this smoothie ultra-delicious. Try my Frozen Greek Yogurt Bars, too!
Frozen bananas, avocados, and cauliflower are also suitable to use in place of Greek yogurt. All these substitutes will give you a thick smoothie, so don’t worry about losing the texture. You’re just not going to get the protein content Greek yogurt gives us.
1 Cup Frozen Wild Blueberries
Add some blueberries for an extra punch of sweetness, antioxidants, and fiber. They’ll also add a beautiful purple hue to your drink. I love to use frozen fruit as it gives a thick texture to the smoothies. If you want to use fresh fruit, there’s no harm in it.
I used a cup of frozen wild blueberries. These tiny morsels of nutrition are a powerhouse of antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals. The tiny tart berries also offer anti-inflammatory benefits to keep your body healthy.
You can switch the blueberries with whatever fruit you have on hand – strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, etc. You can even use a mix of all these berries for a unique flavor.
1 Whole Orange
Bring your sleepy taste buds alive with a zing of orange juice. It adds a nice citrusy flavor to the smoothie.
Oranges are fighter fruits that offer a plethora of health benefits. They are loaded with Vitamin C – the immunity booster that keeps you healthy all year round. Oranges are also good for heart and brain health. Also, they keep inflammation issues at bay.
5 Almonds
Adding almonds to a smoothie is a great way to boost its nutritional value. Almonds are rich in proteins, fiber, minerals, and vitamins. Since we are using nonfat Greek yogurt, the almonds add some nice healthy fats to your smoothie and give it a more balanced nutritional profile.
I used five unsalted whole almonds for this recipe. If you don’t have whole almonds, almond butter will work fine. Almonds deal with bad cholesterol like a boss. They also help regulate blood sugar levels.
Vanilla Extract
Next, we need pure vanilla extract. We only need half a teaspoon for the magic to happen. Vanilla extract adds a sweet fragrance to your smoothie. It’s irresistible.
This ingredient is pretty underrated. But it does so much good to our bodies. The compounds in vanilla extract have been shown to improve digestion, reduce inflammation, and improve brain health. Use it!
Making the Blueberry Greek Yogurt Smoothie
Now that you have all your goodies, you only have to do one thing – blend everything until it’s smooth and creamy. You can use an immersion blender for the job, but I prefer to use my powerful Vitamix Blender. I’ve had mine for over a decade and it’s an incredible machine!
I usually blend for less than a minute. It gives me a nice, thick texture that’s creamy. But feel free to tweak the blending time according to your personal preference.
Once ready, pour your smoothie into a mason jar, top it with some almond slices, and slurp! You can also add some crushed ice cubes for a colder sip.
Greek Yogurt Smoothie Tweaks
This smoothie recipe is easy to customize. Here are some ideas that you might want to try:
- Use a tablespoon of protein powder for a more filling drink.
- Sprinkle chia seeds to boost the fiber and nutrient content.
- Use vanilla Greek yogurt for a unique twist.
- Use a natural sweetener like honey or maple syrup.
- Throw in some greens for a green smoothie.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I Add Ice Cream to My Smoothie?
If you add ice cream, it becomes a milk shake instead of a smoothie. If you want to turn this into a dessert, go for it! You can add whatever flavor you like. I would choose vanilla with this combination. But if I’m fixing a coffee smoothie, chocolate ice cream would be lip-smacking good!
Can I Make this Smoothie Ahead of Time?
There’s no need, really. It’s a quick fix, anyway. Plus, fresh smoothies always taste better.
What Other Fruits Can I Use?
Pick your favorite fruit and go ahead with it. I’ve tried frozen strawberries, ripe bananas, mangoes, and pineapple. All these fruits work great with Greek yogurt.

The tip about freezing the banana in advance for a creamier texture is a fantastic touch. It adds a delightful creaminess to the smoothie while keeping it refreshingly cold.

A whole orange is listed in this recipe. Does that include the rind?
Maryea says
I’m sorry, no it doesn’t include the rind. It should read a whole orange, peeled.
