I’m not sure if I’ve mentioned it in my 9 years of sharing recipes on Happy Healthy Mama, but strawberries are my favorite fruit. I sure have a ton of strawberry recipes to choose from to demonstrate that love.
I love when strawberries are fresh and in season, but even when they aren’t, frozen strawberries are always ripe and sweet. That’s exactly what I use here in this Strawberry Chocolate Protein Smoothie. Using frozen strawberries you buy from the grocery ensures you’re going to have sweet, flavorful strawberries because strawberry growers freeze their strawberries at the peak of ripeness.
If you freeze your own strawberries, make sure they are ripe so you get the best flavor with this recipe. The strawberry flavor definitely shines through as the star here.
For the chocolate flavor, I use raw cacao powder instead of regular cocoa powder. This boosts the nutritional content, adding magnesium, iron, fiber and 700mg antioxidants (flavanols) per serving. Those flavanols are what give dark chocolate its reputation for being healthy!
I sweeten this Strawberry Chocolate Protein Smoothie with monk fruit sweetener, which is natural, low carb, and I’ve been using it more and more as a sweetener. It’s readily available on Amazon (I shared my affiliate link up there), but if you don’t want to get it, I suggest using stevia to taste. You definitely need some sweetener to offset the bitterness of the cacao powder.
For the protein portion of this smoothie, I used unflavored collagen protein. The kind I use is collagen from pasture-raised cows and is a great anti-aging protein to use. It supports your joints, bones, skin, and hair. Collagen is actually the only type of protein powder I’ve ever used or recommended. I have also used marine collagen if you’d prefer that over cow’s.

Can I substitute honey for the monk sweetener? If so what would the ratio be?
