Green Power Smoothie Ingredients
When you look at the list below, you’ll know why this smoothie is called the Power Smoothie. Once all the ingredients become your kitchen staples, you can make this multiple times a week!
Banana
You’ll need one large banana to get a glass of this healthy drink. Bananas are a major part of most energy smoothie recipes because of their creamy texture and natural sweetness. They are a powerhouse of nutrients such as dietary fiber, vitamin B6, magnesium, and potassium.
A banana is also a fat burner because it curbs your appetite and helps you stay full longer.
If you can, use a ripe banana. It’ll give you a creamier texture. For a thicker smoothie, freeze your banana first. To freeze a banana, simply peel it, cut it in chunks, and place it in a freezer-safe container or ziplock freezer bag.
Baby Spinach
Hello, green color! Add two cups of fresh spinach–make sure to pack it in to get as much of the nutrients as possible. If you have time, you can even cook the spinach to make the iron more bioavailable like I do in this Iron Rich Smoothie.
Spinach is abundant in vitamins A and K and also has magnesium, iron, and folate. Fresh baby spinach also has a good amount of Vitamin C – the fairy godmother of the immune system.
These essential vitamins and minerals will boost your energy and improve your overall health.
Unflavored Protein Powder of Choice
I like collagen powder–it’s a source of high-quality protein and provides the added health benefits of collagen. The type shown in the photo is made from marine collagen extracted from wild-caught fish scales and bones. This powder easily dissolves in the smoothie, and you don’t taste it at all. Trust me; this is good stuff!
This recipe is not dependent on using the same powder I use. You can use a scoop of your favorite protein powder you know and love. Just make sure whatever you pick is high-quality, without unwanted additives and sweeteners, and unflavored.
The amount of protein will vary slightly based on what kind you use; the nutritional information in the recipe card is an approximation based on the average of most protein powders.
Maca Root Powder
Here’s an energy-boosting component of our green smoothie! Maca root powder is a superfood with amazing health benefits. It doesn’t add much flavor to the smoothie, so don’t worry about any weird taste. It does have a unique flavor on its own, but doesn’t come through here.
I’ve been using maca root in my recipes for a few years now and love it. (Try my Maca Root Hot Cocoa!)
It’s a superfood (even if you hate that cliché term–it is!) that has gained popularity in recent years due to its potential health benefits. Maca is a root vegetable that is native to the high Andes of Peru and has been used for centuries in traditional medicine for its various medicinal properties. Maca root powder is made by drying and grinding the root, which can be consumed in various forms, such as capsules, powder, or as an ingredient in smoothies or baked goods
Maca root powder is rich in nutrients, including vitamins B, C, and E, as well as minerals like calcium, iron, potassium, and zinc. It is also a good source of plant-based protein and fiber. Some of the potential benefits of maca root powder include increased energy and stamina, improved mood, reduced anxiety and stress, and improved sexual function. Maca root powder has also been shown to have a positive effect on hormone balance, which may be beneficial for women experiencing menopause symptoms.
While maca root powder is generally considered safe for most people, it is important to note that it should be used with caution if you have thyroid issues. As with any new supplement or food, it is always a good idea to talk to your healthcare provider before incorporating maca root powder into your diet.
Hemp Seeds
Let’s add a little more protein punch, shall we? Hemp seeds will give your smoothie a rich, creamy texture.
You know that hemp seeds come from the same plant as marijuana, right? But don’t worry; hemp seeds will not make you high. Because we will be using hemp hearts – the squishy center of the seed – it’s rich in omega-3 fatty acids. What it’ll do instead is nourish your hair and skin. Omega 3 fatty acids also support brain health. See why I’m calling this a power smoothie?
If you don’t have hemp seeds on hand, you can switch the hemp seeds to chia seeds. They are also high in protein and calcium, so you won’t be missing out on any essential nutrients.
Ground Flaxseed Meal
We need some more seed power. I love flaxseeds for the job because they have a nutty flavor, which goes well with the smoothie. Plus, it keeps me full longer. So I don’t have to munch on unhealthy snacks after breakfast.
Flaxseeds keep your bowels regular and reduce unhealthy cholesterol levels. Flaxseed meal is rich in alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), an essential omega-3 fatty acid that has been shown to improve heart health by reducing inflammation and promoting healthy blood flow. They also have lignans, which are powerful antioxidants that support heart health and reduce inflammation.
Flaxseed meal contains phytoestrogens, which are plant compounds that mimic the effects of estrogen in the body. This can help balance hormone levels in women and reduce the risk of certain hormone-related cancers. In addition, some studies have shown that flaxseed meal may have anticancer properties and may help reduce the risk of breast cancer and other types of cancer.
Almond Milk
Now, for the liquid part of the recipe. We are going for unsweetened almond milk because it’s low in calories and sugar-free. To make sure you get the healthiest version, always buy unsweetened almond milk. If you have an almond allergy, try soy milk, oat milk, coconut milk, or any other plant-based milk. (Try this Oat Milk recipe as store-bought usually has unwanted additives.)
Whatever you choose to add, just make sure it’s unsweetened and vegan, okay? And use the same amount – one cup!
Almond Butter
Let’s move to the yummiest part of our green smoothie – nut butter. We are using almond butter for this recipe, but you can always switch it to peanut butter or cashew butter if you like. Almond butter is low in carbs and high in healthy fats. It also has a nutty flavor that blends in perfectly with the smoothie. Use one tablespoons for this recipe.
How to Make a Green Power Smoothie
- Place all ingredients in a blender.
- Blend on high until smooth and creamy.
- Serve immediately. Enjoy
Frequently Asked Questions
What other fruits can I use instead of banana?
This smoothie recipe is easily customizable. The banana adds a sweetness without needing added sugars. If you don’t like banana, you can add pineapple chunks for tropical flavors along with natural sweetness. Don’t want it sweet? Try a granny smith apples for its tartness. You pick! I also have a great green smoothie recipe without banana. Try that one, too!
Can I use dairy?
Yes, you can! Think of a cup of Greek yogurt for creaminess and even more protein or cow’s milk for a balanced smoothie. Cream cheese and cottage cheese are also good alternatives.
Can I make this smoothie ahead of time?
There are a couple ways you can make this ahead of time. First, you can place all of the ingredients except the milk and ice in the blender container, and store it in the refrigerator overnight. In the morning, add your milk and ice and blend. Alternatively, you can put all of the smoothie ingredients except the milk and ice in a freezer bag like I do in these Make Ahead Smoothies. When you’re ready, dump the ingredients in the blender, add the milk, and blend. (Don’t add ice if you do this.) I don’t recommend blending the smoothie ahead of time as ingredients may separate over time and it won’t be as appetizing.
