Ben Cohen, of Ben and Jerry’s ice cream, needed emergency bypass surgery in 2001. Burt Baskin, of Bakin-Robbins ice cream, died of a heart attack. Just sayin’.
With ice cream season right around the corner, it’s important to have some healthier alternatives in your arsenal. Sure, ice cream tastes great, but it is full of sugar and animal fat. I’d much rather eat this refreshing “fruit cream” and go easy on my body. Meghan doesn’t know that difference and to her, this is ice cream.
Even the more health-conscious frozen yogurt is loaded with sugar. Save the ice cream and frozen yogurt for special treats and make this your go-to frozen dessert. This combination is with blueberries and mango, but the possibilities are endless. What’s your favorite fruit combination? Strawberry-banana? Strawberry-blueberry? Start with frozen fruit and have fun!
Better Than Ice Cream Fruit Cream
- Total Time: 5 minutes
- Yield: 1 - 2 servings 1x
Description
A delicious blueberry and mango fruit cream
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup frozen mango chunks
- 1/2 cup frozen blueberries
- 1/4 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
- pinch stevia*
- 1/8–1/4 cup milk (dairy or non-dairy–I use unsweetened almond or coconut and both are delicious)
Instructions
- In a food processor or blender, pulse the fruit until it is broken down. Add the vanilla and stevia and then turn the machine on. Add the milk, a little at a time, and puree until smooth. Continue to add milk to desired creaminess. Serve immediately.
Notes
*If you don’t have stevia, you can substitute another sweetener such as honey or agave nectar. Start with a teaspoon or so and sweeten to taste.

Now we just need some ice cream weather. 🙂
Kath (My Funny Little Life) says
I love fruit cream! And now, equipped with a good blender, I’m really looking forward to summer! 😀
I also make it like a green smoothie sometimes, with spinach in it. That tastes yummy as well. 🙂
Monique says
omg, I think it’s ALWAYS ice cream season haha. I should eat less ice cream, but I love it. 🙂 That looks tasty though.
Lisa says
OOPS, Maryea, just realized I forgot the most important ingredient for the chocolate cherry smoothie: 2 TBS cocoa powder. Hope you enjoy as much as we do.
Maryea says
I was wondering where the chocolate flavor came from! 🙂 Thanks, Lisa.
Zen Tree Wellness says
We do this too! It’s amazing…and if you use frozen banana you don’t even need to add any milk!
Maryea says
Banana “soft serve” was the first fruit I tried this way and loved it!
Averie (LoveVeggiesAndYoga) says
that looks so refreshing!

I love fruit cream! I made some for my family a couple weeks ago…it was strawberry banana. Yum!

Making my own fruit “ice cream” is so refreshing. It tastes wonderful, and I know it is good for me 😀
Ann-Louise says
I love making my own healthy ice creams! My absolute favorite combo is mixing frozen banana slices and frozen organic stawberries together with a glob of peanut butter. So yummie!
Maryea says
You can’t go wrong by adding a little peanut butter in there! 🙂
Ann-Louise says
Hey Maryea! I decided to make a post about my version of healthy ice cream. I call it my Healthy Elvis. Enjoy! 🙂
Kristina @ spabettie says
yuuuuum! I love the idea of this – I made a couple versions of this last summer, things like mango coconut and cinnamon pear. I’m really not TOO much of an ice cream fan, I much prefer fruity based desserts like this when it is hot – refreshing, you know?
although! ahem… just think of my post tomorrow as one of those “special treats” you were talking about… 😉
Maryea says
Oooh cinnamon pear sounds great!
Lisa says
Thanks for this idea, Maryea. We might just have to give it a try tomorrow. We usually do banana soft serve/with raspberries and the boys love it! We also do what we call “dessert smoothies” and they ask for one almost every night. Our favorite is a chocolate cherry smoothie: frozen cherries, almond milk, couple of dates, tsp of vanilla. So yummy! Tastes just like chocolate covered cherries.
Maryea says
Oh my goodness–I cannot wait to try your chocolate cherry smoothie! That sounds incredible!! I always forget to get frozen cherries. I’m going to have to remind myself to put them on the list!
Heidi @ Food Doodles says
Yummmm, that’s the kind of ice cream my kids know on a regular basis too. My husband brings home ice cream very rarely and it makes us all sick to our stomachs. I could eat this every day 🙂 I might just try mango blueberry tomorrow, that sounds amazing, and I have both 😀
Maryea says
My husband likes to buy real ice cream, too. I don’t even eat it anymore. I think I’ve lost the taste for it. 🙂

That’s so funny – I just made an “ice cream” treat for Carter, but haven’t posted it yet. I used frozen mixed berries (strawberries, blueberries, raspberries) with honey and almond milk. He loves it, thinks it’s ice cream – win, win! 🙂
Estela @ Weekly Bite says
What a great alternative to heavy ice cream!! Its like banana soft-serve, but with berries! Yum 🙂
