Part of this blog is sharing things that make life as a mom better. Today, I’m excited to share a recent discovery that’s made my life easier and a little more fun. Stitch Fix! Have you heard of it? Let me tell you all about it.
What is Stitch Fix?
Stitch Fix is an online personal styling service for women. You fill out a detailed style profile that helps the Stitch Fix team know your style and body type. They even go as far as to check out your Pinterest Style board if you have one and decide to share it with them. They really make an effort to get to know what you like. Then, a personal stylist chooses five items she thinks you’ll love and sends it right to your door. You choose what you keep and send back the rest. Stitch Fix makes that part super easy as they send a pre-paid addressed bag that you simply need to put any unwanted items in and throw it in the mailbox. Easy! You also choose how often you want to get a box of clothes, which they call a “Fix.”
How Much Does Stitch Fix Cost?
There is a styling fee to receive a Fix of $20, but that goes towards any pieces you purchase. So you are only charged the $20 if you send back all five pieces. The cost of the clothing varies, but they say the average cost is $65. I’d say the tops are generally less than that and things like dresses and jeans are more. When you fill out your style profile, you can be very specific about how much you usually spend on clothes and they try to stay around your price point. Also, if you decide to keep all five items they send you, you get 25% off of everything.
Pros and Cons
This month was my first month giving Stitch Fix a try, but so far, these are what I found to be the pros and cons of this styling service.
Pros:
-Convenience! I love to shop, but rarely do I have time. It’s more like this: when I’m at Target I see a cute t-shirt so I buy it without trying it on because two kids in the dressing room is not fun and while it fits it loses its shape after four washes. Fail.
-Unique style. I like getting things I can’t find in the regular stores I shop.
-Customized. Each time you get a Fix, you give feedback of what you like or dislike about each piece. I loved my first Fix and can only imagine that each one will get better!
-Fun! What is better than getting a package in the mail? That alone makes this service awesome.
-Build a wardrobe over time. I tend to buy a bunch of clothes a couple of times a year. I like this option of slowly building my wardrobe better.
-Keeping my wardrobe updated. I think it’s so important as a mom to keep an identity. I feel so much better when I get dressed in something cute and stylish.
-Finding new styles I might not normally choose. I love the idea of a stylist choosing things that I love, but didn’t know I would love.
-Fashion help. Each piece comes with a styling card showing you two different ways to wear the piece. So helpful!
-Awesome referral program. For every person you refer to Stitch Fix, you get a $25 credit. I’ve told exactly one person about this service so far, and that person signed up. All you have to do is tell your friends about it and it can totally offset the cost of the clothing! We’re friends, right? If you decide to use this service, I’d love it if you used my referral link! (Just to be clear, I’m not being paid to promote Stitch Fix. Anybody can use their referral program. It’s awesome!)
Cons:
Now that you have an idea of what Stitch Fix is and how it works, let me share with you what I received in my first Fix. I learned about Stitch Fix through other bloggers and love seeing what others have gotten in their boxes, so I figured if I love it, my readers will probably like to see the clothes, too. A fashion model I am not, so please pretend I don’t look totally awkward in these photos.
Piece #1: Daniel Rainn Axis Abstract Mixed Print Key-Hole Blouse Price: $68
First of all, that little clasp at the top is supposed to be together. My photographer (Tim) failed to tell me I had a wardrobe malfunction going on. Probably because he didn’t know. Anyway, this is one of those pieces I never would have picked out at a store, but loved it when I tried it on. It’s loose and flowy and very comfortable. At first I wasn’t sure if I wanted to spend $68 on a top, but then I realized I could wear this so many different ways. I have a pair of cream pants to pair with it for church, it’s great for dinner with skinny jeans and heels as shown, and it’ll be great for weekend barbecues with shorts and flip flops. Keep!
Piece #2: THML Kahlo Racer Back Striped Maxi Dress Price: $78
In the worst example of photo editing ever, I attempted to remove my bra strap that was showing. Sorry. This dress. The picture doesn’t do justice to how much I love it. I got my Fix in the mail on Saturday and wore this dress to church on Sunday. Then I kept it on all. day. long. It’s so comfortable! It’s loose enough to let me move, yet fitted enough that I don’t look shapeless in it. I will live in this dress all summer long. Keep!
Market and Spruce Sam Hi-Lo Short Sleeve Tee Price $44
I’m all about basics that have a great fit and feel. This t-shirt is that. Although it’s a t-shirt, it’s more like a lightweight sweater material. That really makes it a shirt that can be worn three seasons of the year. It’s super soft and drapes nicely. I love the shape and how it dips lower in the back. I also love that it’s casual, yet looks put together. The neutral gray allows me to wear it with colored jeans or shorts or add pops of color with jewelry. I thought the price was a little more than I’d normally spend on a t-shirt, but because of the material and how much I loved how it fit, I decided to splurge. Keep!
Piece #4: 41Hawthorn Abrianna Longsleeve Knit Cardigan Price: $48
I really love this piece. It’s lightweight and fits great. I already have a cardigan in almost the exact same color, though. Return!
Piece #5: Kensie Jeans Johnny Tall Length Skinny Jean Price: $88
These skinny jeans are so comfortable! I love how they fit everywhere except the length. I let my stylist know I do NOT need tall length jeans. Although I’m 5’7″, all of my height is in my torso. Return!
Overall, I’m super happy I decided to give Stitch Fix a try. So many things that I do are for my kids or my husband, so it’s fun to do something for me! I am already excited to get my next Fix! Unless I get overwhelming negative feedback, I’ll continue to share what I get and decide to keep in my boxes. I hope you enjoy seeing this different side of Happy Healthy Mama! If you decide to give Stitch Fix a try, I would so appreciate you using my referral link. Thanks, and have a great week! I’ll be back tomorrow with another fun summer recipe.

It all looks great on you! I want to know where you got the striped shirt with the anchor on it? Love it!!
Maryea says
Thanks, Amanda! I got the anchor shirt at a local store. I did a quick google search and found it on Amazon, though. Here it is. 🙂

I really enjoyed seeing your sense of humor, along with your personal style, in this post! 🙂 I have heard other people say great things about Stitch Fix. Fun idea!

Thanks, Laura! 🙂

Thanks for the recommendation-it sounds REALLY cool. I’m not sure I can justify the prices of the pieces though-I usually spend about $30 on pants and $15 on shirts…but you hit the nail on the head when you said they loose their shape after 4 washes. I love the idea of building a wardrobe w/ QUALITY things. Maybe in a few years when the kids are older and I’m spending less time cleaning toilets and wiping butts and snot I’ll give it a try!
Maryea says
I agree-the prices are a bit high compared to the Target and Old Navy clothes I usually buy. But I figured I will buy less clothes and spend more on a few key pieces and they will last longer and look better. 🙂

I typed a much longer comment than above but not sure where it went?!? Anyway, I’ve seen StitchFix around the blogisphere and have wanted to try it. But, I wear a pretty specific color palette and wasn’t sure how that would work. I went to a stylist several years ago that made a personalized color wheel for me of colors that look best with my hair, skin, eyes. Thanks for all your comments about the pieces and the prices. Look forward to seeing more. ;). I rarely get to shop with 4 littles so I would love the convienience! PS….I’m slightly envious of your tan. I’m still white as a sheet! ;))
Maryea says
I think you could tell the stylist your specific colors. It does ask about what colors you like and has you pick color families you prefer. That’s really cool that you have a personalized color wheel that look best on you! I have no clue which colors work best for me–I just wing it. 🙂 The tan is mostly from running outside. 🙂

How fun! Loved seeing you in your new clothes! I think everything looked so great on you.

Cute stuff. I’ve thought about doing Stitchfix but I still have about 10 lbs of pregnancy weight left to lose.
PS – I’m also 5’7 but have all the height in my torso.

Haha too funny! I guess that is a sign I need a new gravitar. 🙂 That pic is almost 5 years old–it’s probably time.
