Do you have a recipe that immediately brings you back to your childhood? This is mine.

It’s Whole Wheat Molasses Quick Bread, but in my family it’s known simply as “Grandma Bread.”

Anytime my brothers or I make it, we text each other with a picture:

Grandma Bread straight from the oven!

Grandma Pike’s famous bread.  It’s the one recipe that everyone in my family continues to talk about and make, 15 years after her death.  I have a whole blog full of recipes, but I know this is one that I’ll pass down to my kids, also.

100% Whole Wheat Molasses Quick Bread. This is a vegan quick bread recipe that is super easy--one bowl--and totally delicious!! Your family will gobble this up and won't even realize it's healthy.

Whole Wheat Molasses Quick Bread Ingredients

Grandma made her bread with whole wheat flour and all-purpose flour. The whole wheat flour gives it a nutty flavor, while the all-purpose flour keeps it from being too dense.

Although it seems wrong to change a recipe I already adored, I have tweaked her recipe just a tad. I rarely have cow’s milk in my fridge, so I use whatever non-dairy milk I have on hand and add vinegar to make it a dairy-free buttermilk substitute.

The other change is to use Sucunat (an unrefined sugar) instead of regular white sugar. Again, this is mostly because that’s what I usually have on hand.

You can use buttermilk and regular sugar if you want.

Grandma always served her bread warm with a smear of apple butter. It’s HEAVEN. Keep your eyes open for a healthier apple butter recipe coming soon. 👀🍎

I have been dying to try this easy recipe. Unfortunately, I did not have 2 full cups of whole wheat flour, only 0.75 so I used 2.25 cups AP flour for the rest. I LOVE this bread!! It reminds me of New England brown bread I used to eat with baked beans and hot dogs as a kid. Very quick to put together and rose like a dream in the oven, nice full loaf. In addition to the great molasses flavor, it has a great chew and is not as crumbly as my childhood brown bread memories. Next time I make it, will make sure to have enough whole wheat flour and will watch the cook time, maybe cut back a couple of minutes (convection bake). Want a warm piece with a little butter. 😋

Wow, I really wanted to make this bread but I •literally • cannot read the ingredients or instructions because of pop up videos.

I’m so sorry that happened to you. I will let my ad company know that it needs to be fixed.

Seriously! These recipe creators are honestly getting ridiculous with the number of ads on their recipes. I can barely see any recipes through the ads and pop-up videos anymore, and the “x” or “close” buttons on them never work!

I’m sorry you had trouble accessing the recipe. Ads are my only source of revenue from this blog and the only way I can continue to provide free content for my readers. I know they can be a pain, but it seems to be a fair trade off for the work put in to create and share recipes for free to you.

This is the best bread! Can’t believe how easy and delicious it is… just pulled it out of the oven and am eating a hot slice right now. I didn’t have enough molasses, so it was about 1/4 cup molasses. I also used all white whole wheat flour (no pastry flour). The texture may be a little dense, but the flavor is absolutely delicious.

In the oven! I had a hard time not adding any cinnamon or ginger since I always do with molasses baked goods, but I cannot wait to try it! Love how quick and easy it is, with pantry staples and no eggs (migraine trigger)… Might need to become a favorite of our family too!

Grandma’s passed-down recipes are the best! Especially if you can healthy them up a little. You could even make mini-loaves to give as gifts, since it’s such an easy recipe.
