Yes, Stuffed Garlic Bread with melty cheese CAN be a part of your healthy lifestyle. Here’s why:
- Balance is healthy.
- Demonizing foods and never eating foods you love is unhealthy.
- Following the 80/20 or 90/10 principle with your diet is healthy.
- When you eat a lot of vegetables consistently, there’s room for occasionally eating less nourishing foods, like Stuffed Garlic Bread!
Life is just too short to never enjoy some homemade cheesy stuffed garlic bread! Have I justified publishing a recipe for Stuffed Garlic Bread in your eyes? Are you ready to experience it?
This is the perfect appetizer for football season or the holiday season. It’s easy and a crowd pleaser. Let’s make it!
Recipe Ingredients–What You Need
You’re going to love this short and simple ingredient list.
1 large loaf Ciabatta bread
This is my personal favorite bread to use, but you could also use a French loaf, Italian bread, or whatever favorite bread you have. Just make sure it’s a thick enough loaf for stuffing the butter/cheese spread inside. If you decide to use a baguette, you’ll want to cut the loaf differently, and I’ll include those instructions in the recipe tips section towards the bottom of this post. I use freshly baked Ciabatta bread from our local bakery and it’s perfect for this recipe!
4-5 garlic cloves
Garlic is a key flavor in this recipe, obviously. If you don’t love garlic, you could reduce the amount. Personally, I think 4-5 cloves is perfect because it’s strong, but not too overwhelming, but if you’re really sensitive to garlic flavor, you may want to use only 2-3 cloves. With 4-5 cloves, you’ll have a garlicky bread, but it doesn’t overtake the butter and cheese flavor. Don’t use garlic powder–fresh garlic is key here!
1/2 cup pastured butter
Using pastured butter does give this more health benefits. Pastured butter is made from the milk of cows that graze on green grass. It’s a source of vitamin A, vitamin E, omega-3 fatty acids, and beta-carotene. If you don’t have pastured butter or can’t find it, you could certainly use regular butter. You’ll want your butter to be at room temperature.
1 1/4 cups freshly shredded Parmesan cheese
Freshly shredded parmesan cheese adds a delicious flavor to the garlic spread. If you don’t have any parmesan on hand, different cheeses will work here. You could use mozzarella cheese, or if you’d like more than one kind of cheese, using half parmesan and half mozzarella will work also. Both options will give you a perfect, cheesy bread!
How to Make Stuffed Garlic Bread
Making homemade stuffed garlic bread is easy–I promise. You just have to follow the instructions in order and you’ll have it ready and baking in no time! I hope the step by step photos help you see what an easy recipe this is. The melted cheese is epic and you’re going to love this.
- Preheat your oven to 425 degrees F.
- Using a serrated knife, Cut your bread loaf into slices, being careful not to cut all the way through the bread so there’s a pocket for the butter garlic spread.
- Cut the butter into small pieces. In a small bowl, combine butter, minced garlic, and parmesan cheese. Combine until you have a spreadable butter mixture. To do so, you can use a hand mixer or stand mixer to easily combine the ingredients, or stir with a fork.
- Stuff the garlic mixture in equal portions into the pockets of sliced bread, using all of the mixture.
- Wrap the bread tightly with aluminum foil and place it on a baking tray in the preheated oven. Bake for 25 minutes, then remove the foil and bake for an additional 5 minutes until golden brown. Remove from oven and let cool before slicing the bread all the way through to serve .Enjoy!
Recipe Tips and Adaptations
- Make sure your butter is at room temperature. The easiest way to combine the butter with the parmesan cheese and garlic is to use a hand mixer. Of course, a stand mixer would work as well. You can also use a fork.
- If you’re using a thin baguette for this recipe, you’ll want to cut the whole loaf in half so there’s a top and bottom. Spread the butter mixture in the middle and follow the rest of the recipe as written. After it bakes, you can slice the bread to have stuffed baguette pieces.
- If your mixture is too thick to be spreadable, add a little olive oil to help thin it out.
- If you would like to make this a pull apart bread, after you cut the initial bread slices, cut across those slices to make small pockets and fill those with the garlic butter mixture. Bake as directed in the recipe.
- My family prefers the simplicity of using just butter, garlic, and cheese, but adding fresh herbs is a great way to customize this. Fresh parsley or rosemary in the butter mixture would be delicious.
I can’t wait to hear what you think of this garlic cheese bread recipe! Don’t be afraid to dip it in ranch dressing as if you ordered it from Dominos pizza. Not that I’d know anything about that. 😉
Need an ideas of what to pair it with? Well, garlic bead with gooey cheese is a side dish that goes with just about anything, wouldn’t you agree? But I think you’ll love it with this Mozzarella Stuffed Chicken or this Italian Baked Chicken. Would also be perfect with this Mediterranean Quinoa Salad.
