This Peanut Butter-Chocolate Spread takes minutes to mix together and yields a sweet treat that is healthy and delicious!
Is there a better flavor combination out there than peanut butter + chocolate? Really–is there?
Peanut butter and chocolate just go together, but you don’t really think of it as a healthy treat, right? It definitely can be if you create something that doesn’t have all the extras: white sugar, corn sugar, and a toxic preservative (TBHQ) that is a known carcinogen and can cause ADHD symptoms in children.
Guess what? All of those things are found in Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups. 😬 Don’t shoot the messenger.
I know better than anyone (well, except maybe my husband) that when the chocolate craving hits, it hits, and if you don’t have something in the house ready there could be trouble.
Tell me I’m not the only one who gets intense chocolate cravings like this! This spread is perfect because you can make it in a second’s notice with ingredients you most likely have stocked in your pantry.
You can have a tasty chocolate treat in less than five minutes.
The recipe yields a thick spread. I know I could make it a smoother consistency by adding some extra oil, but I prefer to keep the calories in check.
This spread is delicious on apples as pictured above, but it can be used in so many ways. Try it on a banana, spread it on bread, or just eat it by the spoonful! Your kids are going to want to devour this, so if you don’t want to share, make it after they go to bed. I won’t tell.
Recipe Ingredients–What You Need
These are the 3 simple ingredients needed to make this easy and healthy snack!
- 3/4 cup natural peanut butter
- 1 tablespoon unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 tablespoon honey (preferably raw)
Ingredient Substitution Ideas
It’s really easy to customize this recipe and tailor it to fit your dietary needs. It will still be healthy and delicious!
Peanut Butter Substitues
- Make this nut-free by using sunflower seed butter.
- Peanuts can be inflammatory. For a spread that works well with the anti-inflammatory diet, substitute natural almond butter in place of the peanut butter.
- Cashew butter would also be a delicious substitute!
Unsweetened Cocoa Powder Substitutes
- Raw Cacao powder, while more bitter, has more antioxidants than cocoa powder. Read more about the difference in cacao powder and cocoa powder in this Cacao Smoothie Recipe post!
- Melt 3-4 tablespoons of stevia-sweetened chocolate chips and stir them into the peanut butter if you don’t have any cocoa or cacao powder.
Honey Substitutes
- Maple syrup can be substituted for the honey if you’d like this to be a vegan treat.
- Date syrup is another option to make this vegan.
How to Make Chocolate Peanut Butter Spread
This may be the easiest recipe I’ve ever published.
- In a small bowl, mix together all ingredients.
- Continue to stir until the cocoa powder is incorporated.
Recipe Tips
- Note that you’ll need to keep stirring longer than you may think to fully incorporate the cocoa powder into the peanut butter. It will incorporate and become smooth, just keep stirring!
- If you have leftover spread, it can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for about 4-5 days. If you need it to keep longer, use the refrigerator to store it. You’ll need to let it come to room temperature before eating as it will be harder from being cold.
- A hand mixer may be used to mix the ingredients together. Make sure to use a large enough bowl so that the cocoa powder doesn’t fly out!

Hello Maryea, I love the recipe, but how many calories per teaspoon?
Deb (Colorado Springs, CO) says
I didn’t have natural PB, so I used Peter Pan PB (creamy). I also used Organic Agave Maple Syrup in lieu of honey. I then added chunky applesauce & mixed well with a standard metal teaspoon (yummy)! Craving satisfied …thank you for the basis of it! BTW …I found your site when I did a Google search with “peanut butter & unsweetened coca powder”. That’s all I had on hand & knew I wanted to make something quick & sweet with it because of sudden craving! 😉
Maryea says
I’m glad you found me via google! I love your search. 🙂 Sounds like some great modifications you made and yes, a perfect way to satisfy a craving!

I know you posted this quite awhile ago, but if your still making this, may I make a suggestion? You mentioned that it was a thick spread and contemplated adding in some oil to thin it out but wanted to keep your cals in check. When making nut butter spreads at home, I almost always add in some vanilla almond milk, for several reasons. 1. It gives a better consistency and, therefore, better “mouthfeel” since it’s smoother; 2. It enhances the flavor (IMHO), adding a different dimension, giving it a subtle vanilla flavor, which, for ME, always makes PB and chocolate taste better; and 3. It gives you MORE! With the added milk, it stretches the spread quite a bit.
Try it out the next time you make this; I’m almost certain you’ll like it!

What a great idea! Thanks for the suggestion. 🙂

Uck, grammar. I meant “you’re” NOT “your.” LOL

My husband is pretty much a kid so I think he’ll love this! 🙂

I wonder how this work if you stuck it in the fridge for a bit and then scooped some out and dipped it in melted dark chocolate– bon-bon-ish.
I just might try it and let you know.
Maryea says
Ooh, definitely let me know how it works!
Meg says
Tried it today, so delicious! I put the pb mix in the fridge for about 2 hours, melted a few ounces of dark chocolate and used a mini cookie scoop. Super yummy and so much healthier than your traditional pb truffle!!
Maryea says
I have some in the fridge right now–definitely trying this tomorrow. Thanks!

I love dark chocolate PB from pb&co! This is making me hungry 🙂
Maryea says
You are the second person who has mentioned dark chocolate PB from pb&co….why haven’t I tried it?!
Amber says
Wow, yum! This may be just the thing to get my son to eat certain fruits he doesn’t like. And I love the idea mentioned above about using it as a frosting…so good!

This deliciousness is why PB&Co’s Dark Chocolate Dreams should sponsor me. I’m in love with chocolate peanut butter. 🙂

I love making this! Only I don’t use honey (of course). I find that it tastes really good as a frosting 😉
Maryea says
You’re right–this would make a delicious frosting! Great idea. 🙂

I am with you, this kinda thing needs to be homemade. Besides – it just tastes so much better.

My kids are going to go nutty for this (pun intended). They absolutely love PB and we love your other no-sugar apple dip. I have the recipe memorized. Since they don’t have school today I’m going to make this for them for a snack. Thanks!
