One of my greatest joys in life is taking a treat that is traditionally unhealthy and turning it into something that is not only nutritious, but also delicious. Is it weird that I get joy from this? Because I totally do.
When I first made this Dairy-Free Orange Creamsicle Smoothie, I couldn’t wait to gulp it down. Instead, my kiddos, Meghan and Luke, hogged the whole thing and I barely got a taste. I couldn’t be upset when I heard them making “Mmmmm!” sounds as they drank. Plus, I knew I had plenty more oranges in the pantry and I’d definitely be making more.
This Dairy-Free Orange Creamsicle Smoothie brings me back to my childhood, when I loved Orange Push Ups. I loved the creamy texture, the sweetness, and and bright orange flavor. This smoothie brings you all of that but in a much healthier way.
I couldn’t decided whether to call this Orange Push Up Smoothie, Orange Julius Smoothie, or Orange Creamsicle Smoothie. It’s reminiscent of each of those treats, but I went with Orange Creamsicle because I liked the way it sounded best. Simple as that. 🙂
I wanted to take the dairy out, but keep the creamy factor. I achieved this with coconut milk. I used lite coconut milk (canned), which keeps it lighter, but there’s still enough fat to keep the creaminess.
You can taste the coconut a bit, so if you aren’t a fan of coconut flavor, I suggest trying cashew milk. While it isn’t as creamy as coconut milk, it will still lend a creamier texture than almond milk.
I actually think the slight coconut flavor works well here and the orange flavor is strong enough that it’s still the star. A touch of vanilla completes the lovely flavor combination.
To sweeten this, I used honey. If you want to make this without any added sweeteners, you can try a banana or a few dates. I didn’t want to use banana because I thought it would overpower the orange flavor too much.
To get a cold, thick smoothie, I froze my orange segments before blending. It worked really well.
The smoothie was even thicker than the pictures show. The photo shoot took about 30 minutes and of course the best shots were from the end when the smoothie was quite melted.
Even the melted Dairy-Free Orange Creamsicle Smoothie tasted incredible, though!

Should the coconut milk be cold or frozen before blending?
Maryea says
Room temperature is fine, but it will work if you have it cold as well. If it’s frozen it may work, but it will be thicker and will depend on what type of blender you have how easily it blends.

This recipe is delicious. It’s like a cross between a creamsickle and pina colada. I used Agave instead of honey to minimize too many competing flavors and it taste awesome. Thanks for the recipe!

Maryea;
Hi,I haven’t made your orange creamsicle smoothie yet but I will make it soon and I will let you know how much I enjoy drinking it.i can only put one small frozen segmented orange in my blender with the other ingredients and I will use a stevia packet in the smoothie instead of my honey.i have a magic bullet blender that is for 1 person to use at a time.

Hi maryea:
This is the first time Ihave been on your website looking for healthy smoothies to make in my magic bullet blender.
My name is kKim and your smoothie recipe looks really good to make in my blender but I have type 2 diabetes and I take a pill and I am on insulin.
Your smoothie recipe seems very high in sugar and it would put my blood sugar even more. Is there a way that I can cut back on the sugar in your recipe?I would still like to make your smoothie in my blender soon.

Hi Kim! This is definitely more of a dessert smoothie with the added sugar from the honey. To cut back the sugar, you can use stevia or leave it out all together. I think it would still be good, just not as sweet. I hope that helps! xoxo

This looks so good! I’ll have to try freezing oranges like that. It never occurred to me to try doing that. This will be a perfect hot day treat.
Maryea says
I figured that I freeze bananas all the time–why not oranges? 🙂

Hey Maryea! I’ve been tooling around the internet saying hello to other bloggers who will be attending EFC in May!
This recipe brings me waaaaaaaay back to the Push-Up days! And Orange Julius at the mall! I also have a very picky 2-year-old who I think would enjoy this.
Hope to meet you at EFC!
