Making the Switch to an Organic Mattress: My Green Mattress Review

Conventional mattresses are made with harsh chemicals that are linked to many health concerns. Here’s our story of switching to a safer, organic mattress.
organic mattress Did you know that the average person spends four entire months out of any given year in bed? That’s four months of the year, laying on your mattress, breathing in whatever happens to be in the air.

So what are you breathing in? Well, that depends a lot on what kind of mattress you have.

What’s in your mattress?

Conventional mattresses are made with petrochemicals, plastics, vinyls, flame retardant chemicals, and synthetic latex. When you put all of this together, you’re left with a whole lotta volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

So what you’re breathing in are compounds that are known to be carcinogens, endocrine disruptors, and neurotoxins, for starters.

The flame retardants are especially worrisome. How ironic that something that is supposed to keep us safe by stopping our beds from catching on fire can actually cause us a lot of harm. These chemicals have been studied and shown to have links to:

  • lower IQ scores
  • developmental delays in children
  • infertility
  • birth defects
  • hyperactivity and other behavior disorders in children
  • liver, breast, kidney, and testicular cancers

I’ve known this for a long time, but in my search for a solution for my family, every organic mattress I came across was crazy expensive.

A few years back I told you how we settled on organic mattress pads since the organic mattress option seemed out of reach for our family.

It turns out, I just needed to keep looking.organic mattressA friend recently spurred me to continue my research, and I was SO EXCITED to find an AFFORDABLE organic mattress option. Let me tell you about My Green Mattress!

An Affordable Organic Mattress?

YES! At the time of publication, My Green Mattress products start at $249 for a crib mattress and $549 for a twin mattress. You can get all the way up to a king sized for under $1000!

Their luxury line is a little more, but still not as crazy expensive as most of the other organic mattresses I’ve come across. organic mattressBut what are they made of? Are they actually safer?  They are made from top quality ingredients and yes, they are definitely safer and better for our health than conventional mattresses.

All of My Green Mattress’s mattresses are handcrafted  in Illinois. These are the natural materials they are made from:

  • 100% Natural Wool The wool is sourced from a company in California. The wool is certified organically processed. It isn’t considered certified organic wool only because the sheep don’t eat a strict organic diet, but graze naturally in open pastures. Wool is a natural flame retardant.
  • GOTS Certified Organic Cotton Using organic cotton is important because conventional cotton will have pesticides and insecticides.
  • 100% All-Natural GOLS Certified Organic Latex The latex used is not synthetic or blended with any synthetic materials like fillers, dyes, adhesives, or petroleum-based ingredients. The natural latex is made without any harsh chemicals.

The more we read about My Green Mattress, the more we knew we were ready to make the switch from conventional to organic mattresses. We decided to start with one mattress to test it out before committing to all the mattresses for our family.

We started with Meghan’s mattress because she is our pickiest sleeper. About a year ago, actually, she was complaining about how uncomfortable her bed was and was having more trouble than usual falling asleep.

We bought her a memory foam mattress topper, mostly out of desperation, and she loved it. I knew it wasn’t a good solution because memory foam mattresses are some of the worst offenders when it comes to VOCs. It bothered me so much that she was sleeping on it, even though it helped her sleep better.

So Meghan’s mattress was the first to be replaced, and we were nervous about how she’d sleep on her new mattress. We got her the Natural Escape Mattress with a Comfort Latex Mattress Topper. We decided to go with the topper since she’s grown accustomed to sleeping on something softer and squishy.organic mattress

The good news? Meghan has loved her new organic mattress set up and has been sleeping great! organic mattress

She wanted to show you just how soft and plush her latex topper is. It is so comfy!

I’m so grateful we found My Green Mattress. They are truly a fantastic company that makes a quality product at the most affordable price point I’ve found. We are excited to have our whole family sleeping on safe, organic mattresses, finally! If you’re looking for an organic mattress, I highly recommend you look at My Green Mattress.
