Giveaway and Review: Moody Sisters Natural Skincare

Happy Healthy Mama Giveaway Week continues!  If you haven’t yet, head over to Monday’s post to enter to win a set of Onxy stainless steel ice pop molds and Tuesday’s post to enter to win some healthy pantry staples.

So many of you have emailed me or commented suggesting I do a post on which natural products I use and love.  I’ve hesitated to do it because I think it’s really hard to get behind a product.  I take it seriously; I’m not going to tell you I like something unless I’m sure it’s a good recommendation.

And quite frankly, good natural products that actually work are hard to find.  I’m constantly switching deodorants; after four years I still have not found a natural one I can stick with.  Same with facial care products.  The list goes on.

When Moody Sisters etsy shop contacted me to try some of their natural products, I was hesitant.  I often turn down such offers because I worry about having to give a bad review. I know I have to be honest with my readers and it’s an awkward situation when a company or person contacts me to try their products and give a review.

But then I saw that they had a natural sunscreen bar for me to try, and I couldn’t say no. Natural sunscreen is another one of those products I have the hardest time finding one I like, so I creeped out of my comfort zone and agreed to try their products.

They sent me three natural lip balms and their natural sunscreen bar to try.  Since the sunscreen was what I was most excited about, I’ll start with that.

I’ve tried so, so many different brands of natural sunscreen.  Most of the time, the only thing I like about them is that they are free of the toxic chemicals regular sunscreens contain.  Most of the brands I’ve tried are such thick pastes that trying to rub them into my kids’ skin is nearly impossible.  They end up looking like little ghosts running around the yard.

Moody Sister’s sunscreen bar was different.  It came in bar form, like a bar of soap.  I rub it on my kids’ skin and then use my hands to rub it in.  And guess what?!  It easily absorbs into the skin and isn’t a thick paste that leaves their skin looking white!  Yes!

But does it work?  We’ve used it all spring and summer and it’s worked perfectly. Not even the slightest tinge of pink skin over here.  We’ve used it through sweat and even in the pool.

It is mixed with insect-repelling essential oils, so it keeps the bugs away, too.  That means that it smells like a citronella candle, which isn’t my favorite smell, but I like that it naturally repels insects while protecting from the sun.

The only thing I don’t love about this sunscreen is that because of the bar form it’s hard to keep it from getting gunky.  When we’ve been out and about using it things have stuck to it, like sand and grass at the park.  A small negative for the otherwise great ease of use.

I was also sent three flavors of Moody Sisters natural lip balm:  vanilla almond, chocolate mocha, and rose tinted vanilla.  I’ve been using lip balm on a regular basis ever since I became obsessed with Lip Smackers when I was 10 years old.  I’ve used a lot of different kinds.  If the Sisters had just sent me the vanilla almond and chocolate mocha, I’d say there’s nothing special about these lip balms. They are okay.

But.  They also sent me the rose tinted vanilla.  This is the first tinted lip balm (not gloss) that I’ve liked.

I’m not a lipstick girl.  I put it on and feel like I look like a clown.  This tinted balm, however, just gives the right amount of color that looks really natural.  I feel like even if I’m not wearing make-up, if I put this balm on I look a little more put-together.  I will definitely be ordering more when mine runs out.

Overall, I’ve been super happy with Moody Sisters Natural Skincare products and don’t hesitate to recommend them to you.

Guess what?!  One of you will get to try out $25.00 worth of the product(s) of your choice from their shop!  There are tons of great products to choose from.  I actually recently decided to try more of their products and ordered their natural deodorant and dry shampoo and am waiting for them to arrive!

For a natural deodorant I love Soapwalla (no affliation) and have been using it for years. It doesn’t leave any residue. Sometimes if I’m going to a wedding in silk I’ll wear something stronger, but other than that it works great. Here’s her site if you want to check it out: http://soapwallakitchen.com/collections/all/products/deodorant-cream
I’m looking for a good natural make-up line that’s sold somewhere where they’ll show me how to use it. Can only find Aveda in department stores, but it feels more skin-care than makeup to me.

Oh man, I could really use some natural deoderant that works in the high heat/humidity of the southeast! My homemade natural stuff works great the rest of the year, but often I have to resort to Toms or worse for my deoderant needs in the hot hot summer.

    A natural deodorant!
It’s so hard to find a working one…
At the moment I’m using one (“The Guv’ner/Lush) but I’m not happy with the scent. It’s a little bit like licorice…

For anyone looking for a natural deodorant that WORKS, please please PLEASE give Bubble & Bee a try (www.bubbleandbee.com). Though they make multiple deodorant products (balms, creams, sprays, oil-based — there is truly something for everyone), they make something called Pit Putty that I live and die by. It comes in various scents (ALL intoxicating) and is truly NATURAL. There are only TWO ingredients (not counting the organic essential oils used to scent the item), both of which are organic AND edible, and the founder/owner/manufacturer is uber knowledgeable and just SO friendly (I’ve contacted her several times, and she is always SO kind and patient). They sell a bunch of other stuff, too, so go check them out!

When I started using this about6-7 years ago, I was coating my underarms in clinical strength antiperspirant several times a day and STILL stinking and sweating. Even in the dead of summer, after spending a whole day sweating in the yard, all I ever need is one application to keep me stink-free. (Another swipe is necessary if I have a workout planned.) It’s deodorant so it will NOT keep you dry all day, but sweating is a natural and necessary process that lets your skin breath, allows you to cool off, and helps expel toxins and impurities from your body. The pit putty is a white product, so, if you’re going to be sporting a tank top and really sweating (like at the gym), your sweat will leave white track marks where it travels down your arm, but it’s easily wiped away.

As far natural sunscreen, I’m a HUGE Fan of Badger and ThinkBaby. Neither have nano or micronized particles or use titanium dioxide, and both go on smoothly and rub in easily. (With the old Badger formulation, that was not the case. They reformulated, and now their products no longer leave that ghostly, white film on the skin. AND, though I’m VERY sensitive to fragrances and scented products, their VERY mildly scented sunscreen is SO subtle and does not bother me AT ALL. I’ve been relying more on Badger’s sunscreen this summer, and it has NOT let me down, yet. And, I’ve been in the yard EVERY day it’s been sunny out, for a full work’s day worth of time.

PS. The putty does require you to rub it into your underarm after applications to make sure it adheres and sinks into your skin, which does take some time getting used to after a lifetime of antiperspirant and conventionally toxic deodorant use, but it’s second nature before you know it. I recommend Pitty Putty to ANYONE who mentions they’re looking for a better alternative to their current deodrant. Obviously, I’m a believer! 🙂 Give it a try; I really don’t think you’ll be disappointed. 🙂

P.S. Would you be willing to list which natural deodorants you’ve tried and why you didn’t like them? I’ve never seen a powder deodorant… Can’t wait to hear what you think of it!

P.P.S (lol) As long as we’re all leaving our wish lists, I’d like to find an all natural mascara that works as well as the toxic commercial brand I’m addicted to. If anyone knows of one please share! For other all natural makeup I recommend this brand (not affiliated at all, I randomly found them one day on etsy and I love their eye shadow, eye liner and foundation… Just not their mascara. My reason- because I curl my eyelashes and the second I put on their mascara I instantly have straight short black lashes) http://www.etsy.com/shop/WillowTreeMinerals
