I love sharing with you all of the natural products that I use. I didn’t switch to 100% natural products in my house and beauty care routine all at once. It’s been a journey over a long time period. It’s taken me years to find certain products that I like enough to recommend.
As I learn more about which dangerous chemicals to avoid, I search for the best products that don’t use them. It’s been a whole lot of trial and error. One area that’s been the most difficult for me is cosmetics. I don’t want to put chemicals on my face that absorb right into my skin and can compromise my health. Yet I want to use quality cosmetics that look good when I wear them. Not easy to find!
These are the main ingredients I look to avoid in cosmetics:
Parabens
Parabens are linked to cancer, endocrine disruption, and reproductive toxicity.
Phthalates
Phthalates are linked to endocrine disruption, cancer, and liver/kidney/lung damage.
Synthetic Fragrance
Lots of chemicals can be hiding in fragrance, and it is also linked to asthma and allergies.
Triclosan
Triclosan is linked to cancer and endocrine disruption.
Mineral Oil
Mineral oil creates a film on your skin that doesn’t let it release toxins.
After trying out several different brands of natural cosmetics, about two years ago I stumbled upon tarte cosmetics and gave them a try. I have been hooked ever since.
See that list up there of what I try to avoid? Tarte’s products use naturally-derived ingredients and none of those dangerous ingredients I listed. I first started using their foundation and loved it. From there I tried their pressed powder and blush. Every time I tried a new product, I loved it. I now use a whole lot of their products! Here are some of my favorites (you may click on the images to view the products if you wish):
Amazonian Clay 12-hour Full Coverage Foundation
This is a foundation formulated with Amazonian clay. It goes on smooth, covers beautifully, and feels light. I love this foundation! It has SPF 15 and lasts all day.
Amazonian clay tinted pressed powder
They call this pressed powder “smooth operator” and I think that’s a perfect name. It’s very smooth and eliminates shine. Need it. Love it.
Lights, camera, flashes statement mascara
This is a powerful mascara. It’s not clumpy or flaky and it works. I’ve been so happy with it!
Amazonian clay 12-hour blush
Pink cheeks, naturally! This blush comes in a bunch of colors and I’ve tried a few of them. Right now I’m using fearless, which I admit I love even more because of the name. You’ll love this blush!
Amazonian butter lipstick
I’m not even normally a lipstick girl, but this butter lipstick turned me into one! The angelic nude color is my absolute favorite. It’s perfect for everyday wear or going out. I just love it. I also have coral blossom for when I’m feeling brave or in more of a bright lipstick mood, but I’m more of a natural lips kind of girl. This lipstick is so soft and smooth with no clumps whatsoever. Possibly my favorite product of all of tarte cosmetics.
rainforest after dark colored clay eye & cheek palette
This set has 6 different eye colors, a blush, a bronzer, and a highlighter. I love the eye color shades! The bronzer is nice, also, for when I feel like I look washed out. I wish I knew how to use the highlighter. I need make up help in that area!
This is my newest tarte purchase and I’m really loving it. You know what I really love about these products? Not only are they not made with ingredients that are bad for me, they are made with ingredients that are good for my body. This lip tint has vitamin C, vitamin E, and peppermint oil. I can actually feel the peppermint oil when I put it on. It’s not strong, but noticeable. These ingredients are soothing and moisturizing my lips–I love it!
This is the first time I’ve written a Natural Products I’m Loving Now post around just one brand. Tarte cosmetics has taken over my make-up drawer, though, and thought I should share with you! All of these products rate well on the Skin Deep database and I feel good about putting them on my skin. If you can have a superior cosmetic product that works well and isn’t putting damaging chemicals into your body, why wouldn’t you?
It doesn’t hurt that they have amazing packaging, too. I’ll admit that I love these products even more because they come in great packages. Yep, marketing works. Whether that’s important to you or not, if you’re looking for a natural cosmetics line, give tarte cosmetics a try. I’ve been loving this line for over two years now and think you’ll love it, too.

I LOVE tarte brand. I found them when I was buying makeup for my 5 year old to a dancer in the nutcracker- she needed blush, eyeliner, brow liner, and mascara- and I didn’t want to seep chemicals into her baby skin. I started using some of her leftovers and am now a regular. I have never tried a full coverage foundation before theirs- but it is absolutely perfect!! It hides my old red acne scars and feels completely light and soft. They have a lot of different colors, so the lady at ulta helped me to find my perfect match. I also don’t go a day without applying their eye shadow primer on my kids- it keeps the shadow perfectly in place for 12+ hours.

Oh wow–I need to try that primer! I have been slowly building up my collection. 🙂

Try red apple lipstick. I live them! They have awesome sample packs you can try. My advice is to they with their Rally Balm, it makes their rich colors go on beautifully. 🙂

Thanks I’ll check it out!

what eyeliner, eye shadows and concealors do you wear if any? Also do you know if they are gluten free?
Thanks for the hard work!!
Maryea says
Yes, they are gluten-free. I can’t believe I didn’t share my eyeliner in this post–whoops! I use their Skinny SmolderEYES eyeliner and love it! I have 2 colors, onyx and moonstone brown. For eyeshadow, I use what is in the rainforest palette (6 shades). I need to get some more eye shadow. I also use another brand of mineral shadow from an Etsy shop that closed down, so I didn’t share those.

Oh dear, a typo on the word “questionable” in my post! Not good! 🙁
Maryea says
Haha no problem! You should see some of my typos before I hit “publish.” 🙂
Jeri Peratis says
Oh my gosh!! This just what I’ve been looking for. Not only are they free of quesionable ingredients, but they aren’t
tested on animals!! That’s one criteria in anything I purchase. Thank you so much for the introduction of this product line. I will definitely be trying some of these!
Maryea says
You’re welcome!
