Easy Chocolate Orange Cake

Description

This Chocolate Orange Cake is moist, rich, and has a lovely orange flavor.


Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1 tablespoon vinegar + enough whole milk to equal 1 cup
  • 1 3/4 cup (219 grams) flour
  • 1 1/2 cup (300 grams) sugar
  • 3/4 cup (64 grams) natural cocoa powder
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup avocado oil
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 tablespoons orange zest
  • 1 cup orange juice

Instructions

  1. Combine the vinegar and milk in a glass measuring cup and set aside.
  2. Grease a (12 cup) bunt pan and lightly dust it with flour. Set aside.
  3. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
  4. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder,
    and salt.
  5. In a separate large bowl, whisk together the milk, oil, eggs, orange zest, and orange juice.
  6. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir to combine.
  7. Transfer the cake batter to the bunt pan and bake in the preheated oven for 40-55 minutes.
  8. Start to check the cake at 40 minutes, when a toothpick comes out of the center of the
    cake clean, it’s ready.
  9. Allow to cool completely on a baking rack before removing from the
    bunt pan. Serve naked or add a chocolate glaze, as desired. (see notes for chocolate orange glaze recipe)

Notes

Ingredients for Chocolate Orange Glaze

  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 3 tablespoons cocoa powder
  • 4 tablespoons heavy cream
  • 2 tablespoons orange juice
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla

Directions for preparing Chocolate Orange Glaze

  1. Sift your powdered sugar and cocoa powder into a medium bowl (this assures there are no lumps).
  2. Whisk in the heavy cream, orange juice, and vanilla until it is incorporated and a smooth consistency.
  3. Pour over your cooled cake.
